Letter to ABS-CBN regarding TV Patrol World
I have emailed ABS-CBN about a similar topic before but apparently my feedback was ignored. Up until now, I still do not understand why attention-hungry and nearly washed-out celebrities going topless is considered news. In my opinion, this is not news at all. Here I was tuning into ABS-CBN at around 5 pm waiting for the TV Patrol News Update to show the ongoing preparations on Barack Obama's forthcoming inauguration. When it finally appeared, I was appalled to see that what they consider to be an update is some piece of information that specific stars are posing topless! What an update! What an irrelevant piece of trash! The date today is January 20 and the rest of the world are waiting for history to unfold yet it seems as though the news program considered it to be just another story and went on emphasizing on a piece that would do absolutely nothing for the Philippines. Being a news program that I constantly watch, I found myself to be utterly disgusted with TV Patrol. Is this what you call responsible journalism? I do not think this even falls under the category of showbiz news because it was not news. The status of Piolo Pascual and Angel Locsin's new movie in the box office is an example of showbiz news because it is something that every Filipino could relate about. On the other hand, informing us about Nina Jose and Cristine Reyes' attempt at becoming sluts would only appeal to perverts who would only end up raping women. Furthermore, this piece of "news" implies that it is alright for Filipino women to strip and go topless because it is what celebrities are doing. If this is a deliberate marketing ploy to get people talking about these good-for-nothing celebrities, get it on "The Buzz" or on shows that feed gossipmongers. History is about to unfold and the news about Obama basically covered the same number of airtime as Cristine Reyes and company. Is there really no other important news going on in the world today that TV Patrol opted to showcase the shenanigans of unimportant talentless celebrities? Because from what I know, the primetime news program could cover Barack Obama alone despite the time difference. There are also important news in the country that should have been more emphasized like Jocjoc Bolante. There is also the war in Gaza that is severely unemphasized in Philippine news because it seems like it is usually compressed together with other world news for just one minute. I sincerely believe that TV Patrol is a program watched by Filipinos of all classes and it is important for everyone to see what other countries are doing so that we as a nation would have an idea of how to improve ourselves. We would never grow as a nation if all we see are more and more stupid and brainless celebrities are stripping down. It is sickening to see that they get more airtime than news that would and could have an immense impact on the lives of Filipinos. It is quite ironic that the news program is dubbed as "TV Patrol World" yet it tackles less and less about the world. It makes one think of how relevant are the topless Cristine Reyes and Nina Jose in the betterment of the nation as compared to other ongoing events on the day of January 20, 2009. I understand that "Bandila" has an Obama special but it does not give "TV Patrol WORLD" the reason to cut down on such an important coverage on such historic events both in the Philippines and elsewhere just to give way to a piece of trash like that. As a very concerned citizen of the Philippines, I am very very disappointed with the way the said news program filters the kind of news that they impart on the people. I sincerely hope that I would never ever see another advertisement of some annoying celebrity on the news ever again. If this kind of journalism continues, what hope is there left for the Philippines!

Rice and Fall

Unlike the Chinese who consider rice as a dish to be eaten right after the main course and is often considered as a dessert, the average Filipino eats every main dish together with rice. A meal would not be considered a complete one without rice.
In fastfood chains such as McDonald’s, Jollibee and KFC, fried chicken and other viands are served with rice here in the Philippines . Meanwhile, fried chicken in other countries are served as it is or with other side orders like potatoes. This does not come as a surprise considering the Philippines is the eighth top rice consumer as it consumes 9.7 million metric tons of rice in the years 2003-2004.
In recent years, rice shortage is becoming more and more imminent and it is taking its toll right now. Due to the rice crisis, prices are increasing and the less privileged citizens of the nation are lessening their rice consumption. The demand for rice in the Philippines is very high. Even though the prices are high, people still buy it. In order to help the people, the Philippine government started selling rice at cheaper prices in military camps.
In western countries, the rice crisis does not affect them as much as it does the eastern countries. This is mainly due to the fact that the people in the west are willing to eat potatoes and other side orders such as salad and pasta instead of rice. Thus, they are willing to substitute rice in favor of other side orders. For them, it is just similar to rice.
However, the type of food in Asian countries like that of our country has rice as the only side order that is edible with the way the viand is cooked. An example of this is pork barbecue and rice. The taste of pork barbecue and rice will not be the same if pork barbecue will be eaten with Caesar salad.
Taking into account the fact that the cost of making or buying the aforementioned side orders would also be too expensive for the average Filipino, the more they would prefer rice over any other side order. In addition to that, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines has advised the Filipino people to start eating camote or corn instead of rice. Considering camote and corn is cheaper than the aforementioned side orders, it still is not being followed by Filipinos because rice is irreplaceable to most of them. For most of them, camote and corn have its own “use” and would taste differently if paired up with a viand. Thus, it is hard to substitute or replace rice. If it would be replaced by either camote, corn or potatoes, the rate at which it could be replaced would be low.

Why Put These Things in the News?
I just don't get why TV Patrol World shows stuff such as starlets on the newest cover on magazines such as Maxim and FHM. What do I care about those things? Why promote these starlets who do not have any real talent? Does it have to come down to splaying their bodies all over the news just to inform the Filipinos that "Hey! This is our starlet who hasn't been famous even though we have given them tons of shows already!" Instead of listening to important news about the things going on in our country, I have to kick back and hear about how Saicy is sexier than Wendy or that Roxanne is the newest White Castle model. For the record, I don't even know what White Castle is. Even though it is categorized under "Star Patrol", I still do not get why these pieces of information should be that important even by celebrity news standards. These pieces of scrap should be found in programs such as The Buzz whose audience are "curious" people. Furthermore, underage people like me watch the news. I do not want to be informed about what size Angelica Panganiban is wearing during her photoshoot of a certain billboard. No wonder even children like Dindin are being molested what with pages of pornographic materials being shown. It is not only demeaning but goes to show the kind of journalism is being broadcasted to this Godforsaken country. It is bad enough that we have these politicians ranting about the ZTE Broadband deal. Do we have to add sexy starlets to the news lineup to complete the show of how bad our country and industry is?

Because the President is Speaking English...
Usual Complaint of Filipinos While Watching the SONA....
HINDI NAMIN NAINTINDIHAN INGLES KASI NG INGLES!!!
(WE DON'T UNDERSTAND BECAUSE SHE KEEPS ON SPEAKING ENGLISH)
Perfect Solution: Learn to speak English!
Almost every post-interview of the SONA, Filipinos living below the poverty line keep on complaining that they do not understand what the President is saying. It is so annoying to hear that complaint. In the first place, how about if they learn to speak in English. A lot of people keep on complaining that we are Filipinos so we must all speak in Filipino. The glitch in this proposition is not every Filipino can converse fluently in the Filipino language. In fact, Filipinos living in Visayas and Mindanao are more articulate in speaking the English language. Based from experience, it is kind of awkward to speak Filipino in these places where the people would only laugh at you. On the other hand, one could carry on a decent conversation with people in these areas if one would converse the dialect of the place as well as English. I am well aware that the Filipino language is the Philippines' national language yet so is English.
The most irritating fact is that people usually get annoyed when the president is making a speech in the English language people living in the squatters' area in Metro Manila keep on complaining that they do not understand. Well, reality check people you are not the only Filipinos who will be listening to it. There are also those living in Visayas and Mindanao who would understand English better!
Another reason why they should learn to speak in English is also for themselves. If they keep on using that reason that Filipinos should speak the Filipino language, they would end up sounding like the complete imbeciles that they actually are. A lot of people would say that they will not learn because they are not taught for the government's budget is low. I would just like to say that sadly that is the reality, however, these people could learn all by themselves. They can learn and understand that language even by listening to the SONA. They can learn by mere conversation within themselves as well as from watching Hollywood movies from pirated DVDs (not that I am endorsing it) which in reality are rampant in this countries.
To clear things out, I do not think that English should override Filipino language yet it would be better if these people would also learn how to speak in English. It is also for their own good if they do. To those who would like to point out that countries such as China and Korea are doing great while conversing in their own language. Well, the Philippines is a different country and not every technique works for the rest. Try to compare its history and one would know exactly how different they are.
